I actually have no idea what Microsoft was going to announce. For all I know it was a real secret. But of course, everyone was thinking it might be a tablet. Surprise!
The Surface Tablet – which is actually, according to M’s execs, is both a tablet and a PC, or more so – a reimagining of the tablet. Okaaaay! As much as I am an MS fan (well not exactly, but I am writing on a PC) I can’t help but remember when Tim Cook once said – those fusion of tablets and pcs – are like a fusion of a fridge and a toaster – it is possible to make but will not work well as either product individually. . .
So going back to the Surface Tablet, what does it offer? What are the specs? Here’s a comparison chart which I got from Mashable, which I believe they got from somewhere else (or perhaps I’m wrong)
But the more important question is how this announcement will be viewed by those companies who are building their own Windows 8 tablets. Now they don’t have to just compete with one another, they will now compete with Microsoft too. Yikes. I don’t want to say that perhaps soon it will be just the Surface Tablet and no other Windows 8 tablets being produced by other companies; that soon, the Surface Tablet will be competing directly with the iPad. And it’s like one company – one product, the way Apple has been doing for all these years.
The tablets space will be very interesting from now on.
